American journalist, author and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos‘ fiancée, Lauren Sánchez, shared a video Friday of her first Zoom call with her all-female Blue Origin crew.
Sánchez is set to fly to space this spring as part of the Bezos-owned Blue Origin’s New Shepard space tourism program. She will be joined on her journey by pop star Katy Perry, aerospace engineer and entrepreneur Aisha Bowe, bioastronautics research scientist and activist Amanda Nguyen, film producer Kerianne Flynn and journalist Gayle King.
Together, they form the first all-female crew to travel to space since Russian cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova’s solo journey in 1963. Their 11-minute trip on Blue Origin’s fully autonomous New Shepard ship will take them past the Kármán Line, the internationally recognized boundary of space.
“I’m getting introduced to the entire team that we have put together,” Sánchez said at the start of her Instagram video Friday. “I really believe that all of these women are storytellers. They are gonna come back and be able to share that story and also inspire a new generation of explorers.”
Hopping on Zoom with her fellow soon-to-be astronauts, Sánchez urged, “I just kind of want everyone to take a deep breath and soak this all in for a second. Today, you guys, we’re a crew!” Surveying the call, King asked, “Is anyone else nervous? Or am I the only nervous nelly here?” Perry, in response, confessed, “I’ll be a little nervous, but I’ll be looking at y’all.” King then took a moment to explain why she plans on pushing through her own nerves.
“Eleanor Roosevelt said once, ‘Courage is doing something that scares you but you do it anyway,'” King reflected. “I sort of look at it like that — about stepping out of my comfort zone and my box.” Flynn, meanwhile, touted herself and her fellow crew members as “pioneers,” insisting, “We’re trailblazing this path to space for future generations.” For her part, Bowe said she hopes they will be able to “bring a little bit of space back to Earth.”
Echoing Bowe, Sánchez said, “We’re all gonna come back with this profound love of Earth, and we’re gonna be able to share that with the world and, hopefully, touch everyone in a small way that they will wanna help save the planet.”
In her Instagram caption, Sánchez called her crew an “incredible group of women” and remarked, “I can not wait to embark on this adventure together and inspire the next generation of explorers. Excited to share our journey with you. This is just the beginning.”
