Summary: A recent survey by the Pew Research Center revealed that a large number of US adults view AI as a threat. 43% of those surveyed fear its potential harm, while 24% believe the tech will benefit them. The report also reveals that 17% remain optimistic about AI’s impact on the US over the next 20 years.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been among the hot topics in the tech industry. Every now and then, we hear about companies making improvements to their AI products, making them even more useful. While companies tend to stress the benefits of AI, industry experts often see it as a threat to humanity. Now, a new survey report largely talks about the same, revealing that a large number of US adults also think of AI as a threat.

A new survey report reveals that adults in the US view AI as a threat

Last week, the Pew Research Center published the findings of a new survey called “How the US Public and AI Experts View Artificial Intelligence.” The findings published in the survey report are rather more negative than what you may have thought.

According to the report, over 5,000 adults in the US took part in the survey last year, with an additional 1,000 AI experts joining in later in the year. As you’d expect, those working on AI were more optimistic about the tech. On the other hand, the general public has fear and skepticism around AI in the US.

Per the survey report, 43% of those surveyed think of AI as a threat, likely harming them. Only 24% of US adults believe that AI will benefit them, while the other 33% weren’t quite sure. When asked about AI’s impact on the US over the next 20 years, 35% of responders said that the tech will have a negative impact.

A small number of the population is still optimistic about AI

However, 17% of the surveyed adults were optimistic about its impact. The rest of the responders believe that the impact of AI on the US would be a mixed bag of positive and negative. In short, the report indicates that adults in the US see AI as a threat rather than a useful technology.

Speaking of impact, larger publishers are currently seeking help from the government to stop AI theft. They want to restrict companies from using their AI models on copyrighted data. It’ll be interesting to see how the government responds to this appeal.
