Kevin Feige Wants Back To Entertainment Over Homework In MCU

According to a new report, Marvel boss Kevin Feige wants to get back to making entertainment and not homework in the MCU. The article in question from The Wall Street Journal doesn’t have any quotes from Feige itself. However, supposedly plenty of reports from those who have worked with him. From being chased down corridors by staff looking for decisions, to the reboot of how Marvel Studios works now, this is a wide ranging article.

‘Feige declined requests for an interview. This article is based on interviews with more than a dozen people who have worked at Marvel or done business with the studio.’

I’ll only be highlighting a few key pieces, so for the full thing, check the link above. For those who just want the highlights package, I got you.

‘The head of Marvel Studios told colleagues recently that watching all the comic-book giant’s new TV shows and films had started to feel more like homework than entertainment.’

‘The problem, Kevin Feige acknowledged, is that in an effort to satisfy parent company Disney’s hunger for content on its new streaming service, the studio behind “The Avengers” churned out too many movies and shows with interconnected stories.’

We all know this, but it does seem like it was spotted by Feige himself. Though, it is clear that for a long time, Feige had basically lost control of the machine, and the budgets.

‘People who worked at Marvel in the early 2020s said it was challenging to secure enough time with Feige to get his feedback. As a result, they sometimes spent weeks on work that proved irrelevant once he weighed in, then found themselves with little time to implement his changes before a deadline. Desperate staffers resorted to chasing Feige in the halls to get answers.’

Something’s Got To Give

It seems matters came to a head with The Marvels.

‘When production started on the 2023 film “The Marvels,” the filmmakers got little attention from the overstretched Feige. After “Quantumania” bombed, Feige became more involved, hoping to avoid a second faceplant in one year.’

Of course, that faceplant is exactly what happened with The Marvels being the MCU’s biggest flop in terms of cost to box office, WSJ reports the movie cost $300m after all was said and done with reshoots.

The article talks about how Marvel’s ‘parliament’ came together to work out where to go from here. Also having to now resolve the fact that Quantumania, a key to what came next was not liked. Additionally, the Jonathan Majors situation had now blown up.

What’s Next?

‘Now, Feige is leading an internal overhaul aimed at getting the studio back on track. Marvel is making fewer TV shows, with stand-alone stories that don’t require prior knowledge of the MCU. Feige is focused on fixing the studio’s movie slate following recent flops like February’s “Captain America: Brave New World.”’

I waited for streaming, and… Captain America: Brave New World is a rubbish film in my book. Barely watchable, inherently dull, with obvious reshoots. However, now the outlet says Feige is back with his focus on the movies as one of his parliament steps in to oversee the TV side. A more traditional TV side, with series getting multiple seasons and being more self contained.

‘Marvel is releasing only one or two live-action streaming series annually starting next year, and has already ordered multiple seasons of some so their stories can continue without crossing over to the big screen. A senior executive is overseeing television so Feige can focus on film.’

The article then goes on to discuss the plans and eventual announcement of Avengers: Doomsday. Of course we don’t need WSJ to tell us why Marvel has gone back to their most bankable star and directors. But, there is more cost attached to having RDJ and the Russos back. Plus the size of the cast, confirmed and rumored, is staggering.

Then again, if they can do all this for under even $400 million then it’s almost guaranteed profit. There’s no way RDJ back as Doctor Doom in an Avengers film is not making over $1 Billion at the box office. I’ll be there, you’ll all be there, even if we don’t think it’ll be any good. A movie this big will have it’s budget doubled in marketing costs, so it makes money. For Disney though, the measure of success will not that it makes a profit. It will be how much of a profit it makes compared to the MCU biggest movies of the past.

However, from this point out one thing is abundantly clear. The MCU is not what it was, and is likely to never be quite that big again. If Disney doesn’t want it to fall into irrelevance, then they need to manage the franchise better. That means better scripts, better films and better TV shows.

So, Marvel boss Kevin Feige wants to get back to making entertainment and not homework in the MCU. What do you think of this article? Thoughts below as always.
