The in-form French striker suffered a serious ear injury after he was on the end of a horror challenge from Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts. Mateta was taken to hospital after what Palace chairman Steve Parish branded ‘the most reckless challenge on a football pitch I’ve ever seen’. The Eagles forward was caught on the side of the head by the studs of Roberts as he came out to clear the ball. Mateta needed lengthy treatment on the pitch and was taken on a stretcher to an ambulance. The Frenchman later posted on social media that he was ‘doing well’. He was discharged from hospital on Saturday evening after having 25 stitches to repair a ‘severe laceration to his left ear’. Mateta will not be ready to feature against Ipswich tomorrow but Glasner his hopeful the player will be able to make his comeback in the FA Cup quarter final next weekend. Roberts will serve a three-match ban for serious foul play and second-tier Millwall said they will fight any extension. ‘Millwall acknowledges the FA’s statement and will continue to support Liam who has been subjected to horrendous online abuse since Saturday’s collision,’ the club said. Roberts missed Millwall’s home defeat by Bristol City in the Championship on Tuesday but supporters broke out into applause in support of the keeper in the sixth minute.

Jean-Philippe Mateta is making solid progress in his recovery from the sickening injury he suffered during Crystal Palace’s FA Cup win against Millwall last weekend.

The in-form French striker suffered a serious ear injury after he was on the end of a horror challenge from Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts.

Mateta was taken to hospital after what Palace chairman Steve Parish branded ‘the most reckless challenge on a football pitch I’ve ever seen’.
