It director Andy Muschietti is attached to helm Drift, based on an unpublished short story by Ben Queen (Cars 2, The Addams Family 2) and Jason Shuman (“Acapulco”).
The grounded science fiction film is described as “Gravity meets Arrival.”
Deadline reports that it was on the market for less than 24 hours, inciting a bidding war in which Skydance came out on top. It sold for around $2 million against higher if the movie gets made.
In the 38-page story, when his estranged son vanishes during a space mission, a once-legendary, now fallen from grace shuttle commander is pulled into a high-stakes hostage exchange in space to get his boy back from captors who are not from Earth.
Queen and Shuman, who made a splash last year with the sale of their Cola Wars pitch to Sony with Judd Apatow on board to direct, will pen the script.
Andy & Barbara Muschietti’s Double Dream producing alongside Scott Glassgold’s 12:01 Films.
The Muschiettis are currently producing the It prequel series “Welcome to Derry,” due out later this year from HBO.
