Inter will feel they have done the hard bit after avoiding defeat away from home, but Barcelona will fancy their chances of completing the job on the road. Who will triumph?

What a privilege it was to watch Barcelona 3-3 Inter in the first leg of this Champions League semi-final.

It was a match that had everything. Inter arrived in Catalonia in poor form, but they put that to one side and stormed into a 2-0 lead.

Barcelona fought back to level things up at 2-2, before Inter edged ahead again in the second period. The Italians were not 3-2 up for long, with a Yann Sommer own goal after a thunderous strike from Raphinha restoring parity once more.

Both teams had chances for a fourth – and Inter had a ‘goal’ chalked off for a tight offside – but neither was able to establish an aggregate advantage ahead of the return fixture.

There were positives for both managers to take from their respective team’s performance at the Estadio Olimpic Lluis Companys.

Hansi Flick must have been pleased with the way in which his side fought back from 2-0 down. They played some fantastic football at times, with the 17-year-old Lamine Yamal leading the charge.

It was a sensational performance from the teenager. Inter doubled up on him and even added a third man when they could, yet still they could not contain him. The young Spaniard dazzled with his array of tricks, flicks and feints. Yamal’s hips do in fact lie.

A 3-3 draw was a better result for Inter than Barcelona. The Nerazzurri had success with their contain-and-counter game plan. 

Simone Inzaghi’s side were more than happy to soak up pressure before breaking forward at speed. Their runs from deep exploited Barcelona’s remarkably high defensive line on several occasions.

The venue will be different for the second leg, but the match may well follow a similar pattern to last week. 

You would expect Inter to have more of the ball on this occasion (they had just 28 per cent possession in the first leg), but they are more than happy to play reactively when the situation calls for it. Barcelona will push up the pitch as they usually do, regardless of the stadium.

“Next week, Inter can’t just defend,” Flick said after the first leg, clearly hoping that the Nerazzurri will open up more. 

“They have to try and score too. We play with style and confidence, and we know what we can do.”

A place in the Champions League final is up for grabs as Inter host Barcelona this week.

Barcelona to qualify

Inter are a smart, well-coached team. They conceded only one goal in eight matches in the league phase, so they know how to keep the back door shut.

They are also capable of scoring plenty at the other end. Despite trailing Napoli in the title race, Inter are the top scorers in Serie A with an average of more than two goals per game.

Despite all that, Barcelona remain the favourites to reach the final – and it is not difficult to see why. 

It is true that Flick’s team take immense risks with the way they defend, but they have demonstrated time and time again that they can overwhelm their opponents going forward.

That could easily be the case on Tuesday. Whether it is after 90 minutes, extra time or a penalty shoot-out, Barca are best placed to advance.

High-scoring first legs sometimes give way to cagier returns, almost as if both managers subliminally agree that the same cannot happen again.

It definitely can as far as these two are concerned. Barcelona are a front-footed, attack-minded team come what may. They do not alter their approach no matter the occasion.

It would therefore be a mistake for Inter to be overly defensive. As they learned last week, you can create chances against Barcelona if you put their defence under pressure.

It will be a nervy night for both sets of supporters, but the neutrals should be treated to another footballing feast at San Siro.

Raphinha to score any time

Raphinha did not get on the scoresheet in the first leg, but it was his extraordinary long-range shot which led to the Sommer own goal.

The Brazil international has come on leaps and bounds under Flick, who has helped to make him become a much more productive player in the final third.

Raphinha has scored 28 goals and provided 17 assists in La Liga and the Champions League this term. 

That return compares favourably to nine goals and 11 assists in those two competitions in 2024/25. 

With Robert Lewandowski still injured, Raphinha will be the first man Barcelona look to for a goal on Tuesday.
