That is proof enough that WWE holds the 28-year-old in high esteem and, in recent weeks, his popularity with fans has boomed despite his positioning as a villain in storylines. If ‘Dirty Dom’ is emerging as one of WWE’s best all-round performers, it might well be due in part to his deep grounding in the industry, having starred in wrestling storylines long before he was able to wrestle himself. An iconic storyline of the Ruthless Aggression era in WWE in the early-to-mid 2000s was the battle between Rey Mysterio and lifelong pal Eddie Guerrero – with Dom at the heart of it. Mysterio and Guerrero were on-screen enemies at the time, with the latter claiming to be young Dom’s real father – the two even wrestling for his custody. Just eight at the time, the future grappler played the role of a torn and terrified youngster to a tee. In a new interview with Intoxicados Podcast, the younger Mysterio recalled some of his memories of working with his father and the iconic Guerrero, who died in 2005, aged 38. Not least among his highlights was the fact he was paid by WWE for his early work – and handsomely at times, too. My parents, normally they wouldn’t tell me, they would just tell me they put it to the side. “They told me about this because I was asking: ‘How much did I get paid for this?’ “I knew something was coming. They said: ‘You got paid five grand.’” More than understandably, Dom immediately had plans for his new dough, and was keen to spend it the way any eight-year-old would. Dom was in training to begin his own career in 2019 and got involved with storylinesWWE Of his response, he explained he’d said: “’Cool, let’s go to Toys R Us.’ I go to Toys R Us. I get myself a bike and, I’ve always been into old-school Universal monsters, so they had these Frankenstein heads. “[I said]: ‘Let me get a couple of those.’ Long story short, it totalled out to maybe $400, maybe $300, if that.” Alas, that was the end of his spending spree, thanks to a sensible intervention from his mother. Dom went on: “As soon as we got home, I’m like, ‘Hey, can we go to Target?’ “My mom goes, ‘That’s it. That’s all your money.’” After featuring in a future storyline involving his father and CM Punk, Dominik was back on the WWE scene, and for good, by beginning wrestling training in 2018.
