How long will US flags fly at half-staff for Pope Francis?

(NEXSTAR) — Noticed U.S. flags in your neighborhood are flying at half-staff? It comes after President Donald Trump ordered flags across the country to be lowered in honor of Pope Francis, who died Monday. He was 88.

The Vatican said Monday that Francis' death was caused by a stroke that put him into a coma and led to heart failure. He had recently spent 38 days at a hospital for a respiratory crisis that developed into double pneumonia.

His last public appearance was on Sunday with an Easter blessing and popemobile tour through a cheering crowd in St. Peter's Square.

Trump called Francis "a good man" who "worked hard" and "loved the world," adding that it was "an honor" to issue the flag-flying order.

According to Trump’s order, flags are to fly at half-staff until the day of Francis’ interment, a date that was not available Monday.

The Vatican has since confirmed that Francis' funeral will take place on Saturday, April 26.

Per his will, Francis is to be buried in the Saint Mary Major Basilica near an icon of Mary that he held dear, rather than St. Peter’s Cathedral or its crypt alongside previous popes. He called for his tomb to be “in the ground; simple, without particular decoration, and with the sole inscription: Franciscus,’’ or Latin for Francis.

On Sunday, following Francis' interment, U.S. flags can again rise to full-staff, unless Trump issues a new order. State governors may also issue flag-flying orders that instruct flags to fly at half-mast beyond Sunday.

Per U.S. Code, when U.S. flags are to fly at half-staff, you should first hoist it "to the peak for an instant and then [lower it] to the half-staff position." Before it is lowered for the day, it "should be again raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day."

U.S. flags have already flown at half-staff for a considerable amount of time this year. Following the late December death of Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, flags were flown at half-mast for 30 days, the customary time established following the death of a current or former president.

Flags are flown at half-staff “when the whole nation is in mourning,” the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs explains. Barring any additional orders from Trump or state governors, flags will again fly at half-staff — albeit briefly — on Memorial Day.
