BMW has launched the M2 Racing, its new entry-level customer racing platform that is set to make its official debut in 2026.
The Munich brand initially confirmed the development of the new car in August of last year, although it then offered few details other than that it was set to be based on the G87-spec M2.
It pulled the covers off the car at last weekend’s DTM round at the Nordschleife, revealing a significant amount of new information about the car.
Named the M2 Racing, it will be powered by a 2.0-liter, inline-four engine producing 313 horsepower and 420 nm. It weighs 1,498 kilograms and is said to have a top speed exceeding 270 kph (167 mph).
The car has been fitted with a seven-speed ZF transmission and non-adjustable KW shock absorbers based on GT3 technology.
The base price for the car has been set at €98,000 ($111,178 USD) in the EU, with distribution to take place through selected dealers. Sales will launch at the end of June.
“With the BMW M2 Racing, we’ve succeeded in bringing an entry-level customer racing model to the track that combines driving pleasure, performance, and particularly intuitive handling,” said Bjoern Lellmann, Head of Customer Racing at BMW M Motorsport.
“The development was carried out in close collaboration between BMW M Motorsport and experts from series production. The result is a powerful race car that combines easy operation with low running costs.
“This efficiency makes the BMW M2 Racing particularly attractive for grassroots motorsport – and makes racing even more accessible for customers.”
Development testing on the M2 Racing started in November 2023, with a test mule having gone on to cover more than 30,000 kilometers (18,640 miles).
Part of the development was a race outing in last years’ Adenauer ADAC Rundstrecken-Trophy, where factory drivers Jens Klingmann and Max Hesse shared driving duties.
The M2 Racing is eligible for a number of races and championships around the world, including the Nürburgring 24, NLS, TC America powered by Skip Barber Racing School and the Michelin 24H Series.
