Continental has announced that it will discontinue tyre manufacturing operations at its Alor Setar plant in Kedah by the end of 2025. The facility currently produces passenger car, light truck and motorcycle tyres for the Asia-Pacific market.
In a statement, Continental said that the decision to close the Alor Setar tyre plant follows a comprehensive business review to safeguard the company’s competitiveness and business performance in the Asia-Pacific region. “Adapting to changing customer demand, the company seeks to optimise its local product portfolio and its manufacturing footprint,” it said.
The company said that the Continental Tyre AS Malaysia facility presently employs 950 people, and that its priority was to support these employees by offering assistance such as career counseling and exploring potential job opportunities, both within the company and externally.
Despite the plant closure, the German automotive parts manufacturing firm said that Malaysia continues to be a key market for it in the Asia-Pacific region. “The company reaffirms its commitment to its customers and partners in Malaysia, emphasising that long-term relationships and trust continue to be at the heart of its business in the country,” it said.
The Alor Setar plant began operations on December 20, 1979 and has been a fully-owned subsidiary of the brand since 2012. The company continues to have tyre manufacturing operations in Malaysia through its Petaling Jaya plant, which is located in Section 51.
