Gervonta Davis explains what Devin Haney must do to land blockbuster showdown with him after Ryan Garcia rematch
Gervonta Davis is open to fighting Devin Haney after his rematch with Ryan Garcia. The fierce rivals were both competing at lightweight when Haney achieved undisputed supremacy, yet a fight never came to fruition. Garcia floored Haney three times and beat him, but the fight was made a no-contest due to the former’s positive drugs testsGetty Last year, Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh made a money-spinning offer to stage the blockbuster showdown in the Middle East. However, Davis rejected the approach over fears he wouldn’t get a fair shake due to Haney’s good relationship with the Saudis. That doesn’t mean Davis is opposed to the idea of squaring off with Haney though. The Baltimore banger insists he would more than happily share the ring with Haney providing he ‘redeems himself’ after his controversial inaugural encounter with Ryan Garcia last April. “I would definitely be open to fighting Devin for sure, but he’s got to redeem himself,” Davis told Bubba Dub. “If he looks good in his next fight, or if the fight doesn’t go good, or even if he looks good against Ryan too and he doesn’t need to get the win, I feel it would still be a good fight to have. “Even the build-up since we were younger and coming into the game. It was back and forth. “I think it would still be a good fight between me and Devin.” Garcia dropped Haney three times en route to being awarded an initial unanimous decision victory. However, the result was subsequently overturned to a no contest when it was found ‘King Ry’ had failed two drug tests taken around the fight. Davis is willing to fight Haney if he redeems himselfGETTY Garcia was then slapped with a one-year ban from the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) which ends on April 20, 2025. For Garcia to have his boxing license re-issued he must submit a clean drugs test. Providing he is given the all-clear then he is due to face former WBA super lightweight champion Rolly Romero on a May Ring Magazine card in New York City’s Times Square. Haney will also compete on the bill in a separate bout against former unified super lightweight champion Jose Ramirez. If both men get their hands raised in their respective fights then the plan is for them to rematch in October over in Saudi Arabia. Davis, who stopped Garcia with a sickening body shot in 2023, will be a keen observer. Follow talkBOXING on social media talkBOXING is now on Twitter and Facebook.
