Fleury, Landeskog, Monahan named finalists for Masterton Trophy

The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy is awarded annually to a player who exemplifies perseverance and dedication to hockey, and all three finalists this year deserve recognition.

Marc-Andre Fleury of the Minnesota Wild, Gabriel Landeskog of the Colorado Avalanche and Sean Monahan of the Columbus Blue Jackets were voted finalists by the Professional Hockey Writers Association. A player from each team was nominated for the Masterton by local PHWA branches before a vote was held to determine the winner.

Fleury, 40, completed what will certainly be a Hall of Fame career with one final season in 2024-25. He made 26 appearances for the Wild this season, posting a .899 save percentage and 2.93 goals-against average with one shutout and 14 wins. Fleury retires among the all-time leaders for goaltenders in a number of categories, including games played (1,051, second) and wins (575, second), while winning three Stanley Cups with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

This season, Fleury served as a mentor to Wild starter Filip Gustavsson, who set a career high with 31 wins.

“We play because it’s fun, and he’s just making you relax a little bit,” Gustavsson said in an interview with Joe Smith of The Athletic. “Just play. Just do your thing. Especially at this level, it’s kind of stressful sometimes. There’s very high pressure. And having someone like that to calm you down, and you see him having fun out there, it’s helped me.”

Landeskog, 32, completed an incredible injury comeback when he returned to the Avalanche lineup in Game 3 of the first round against the Stars. The long-time captain of Colorado missed three full seasons while recovering from multiple knee surgeries. While he didn’t play in the regular season, Landeskog continued to serve as captain of the Avalanche during his recovery, and he has four points in four playoff games since his return.

“Then there were times where it would feel like it was so far to that next win,” Landeskog said in an interview with Corey Masisak of The Denver Post. “You’ve got to break it down in incremental parts. Like, can I get through this workout? Yes, you did. Check. That’s a win. Throughout some of the tougher periods, some of the setbacks, especially, it’s like, just get through the day. That’s it.”

Monahan, 30, rediscovered his play on the ice with 57 points in 54 games, his first point-per-game season since 2018-19 after multiple injuries disrupted his career. Monahan’s on-ice performance came while playing with a heavy heart after his very close friend Johnny Gaudreau’s tragic passing last summer. Monahan and Gaudreau became friends while playing in Calgary, and this would have been their first season together as teammates in Columbus.

“Just the way Monny has persevered through really, really hard times. It’s been inspiring to me and to the whole group,” Blue Jackets captain Boone Jenner said in a press release from the NHL. “The way he’s handled himself, just stepping in here under those circumstances. He’s been a leader in the room and a leader on the ice. He’s a true pro. Everyone can learn from him.”
