Flames send No. 16 pick to Canadiens for 2022 Monahan trade

The Montreal Canadiens officially own the Calgary Flames‘ 2025 first-round selection in this year’s draft.

Calgary had just a 0.5 per cent chance of retaining their 2025 first-rounder through the Draft Lottery, after dealing a top-10 protected pick to Montreal as part of the trade that offloaded Sean Monahan’s salary in the 2022 off-season.

Monday’s lottery determined that the pick would stay at No. 16.

The Canadiens also own their own pick, which will be the 17th selection in the draft after their post-season exit.

If Calgary had won one of the drawings of ping pong balls during the lottery, it would have jumped up 10 spots and gotten the No. 6 selection.

The good news for the Flames is that they will still pick twice in the first round, as they own the New Jersey Devils’ and Florida Panthers’ selections. If Calgary’s pick was drawn Monday, it would have conveyed Florida’s pick to Montreal.

After New Jersey’s first-round loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, its selection was locked in at No. 18. Florida’s pick will be determined by its finish in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
