"Locals only. Don't live here, don't surf here." Lionsgate has revealed an official trailer for
The Surfer, the latest film from genre filmmaker
Lorcan Finnegan, best known for
his freaky sci-fi film Vivarium a few years ago.
The Surfer premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival last year in the Midnight section.
Nicolas Cage stars as "The Surfer", an American who grew up in Australia surfing at a local beach. When he returns to his beach side hometown in Australia, he is humiliated in front of his son by a local group of surfers who claim ownership over the secluded beach of his childhood. He ends up stuck there at the beach, as intense heat bears down and he continues to battle all of the surf bros who constantly make fun of him. This also has
Julian McMahon,
Nicholas Cassim,
Miranda Tapsell,
Alexander Bertrand,
Rahel Romahn, with
Justin Rosniak, and
Finn Little. This is kind of a modern
Falling Down, though the whole film is also a metaphor for how clique-like society is these days. I'm a big fan of this film -
my Cannes review is quoted on the poster and in this trailer. It's not what most are expecting, totally crazy & weird, still a damn good film. //
