EPA plans to weaken ‘forever chemical’ drinking water limits

The EPA announced Wednesday that it plans to  weaken federal limits on toxic “forever chemicals” in drinking water.

The Biden administration last year passed regulations requiring drinking water utilities to filter out six types of these chemicals, also known as PFAS.

The Trump administration said it will maintain requirements for two types of these chemicals, called PFOA and PFOS, but will get rid of requirements to filter out four others.

For the regulations on those two chemicals, the Trump administration will also give companies two extra years before they have to filter out these chemicals. This means water contaminated with those two PFAS now won't need filters until 2031.
