Enzo Maresca has confirmed Chelsea have a new No.1 goalkeeper in the Premier League with Filip Jorgensen set to replace Robert Sanchez.

The Spain international had received the backing of his manager on multiple occasions over the last couple of months, despite a string of high-profile errors.

Indeed, Sanchez had been encouraged to continue taking risks with the ball at his feet by Maresca who had suggested he would drop the former Brighton goalkeeper if he were to adopt a more conservative approach.

Despite the unwavering support he has received, Sanchez has been unable to eliminate the basic errors from his game and the goal he gifted Erling Haaland in a recent 3-1 defeat at Manchester City appears to have forced a change of plan from Maresca.

Summer signing Filip Jorgensen started Chelsea’s most recent Premier League game against West Ham a fortnight ago, but Sanchez returned to the starting line-up for last weekend’s FA Cup defeat against his former club.

Sanchez, however, will not retain his place when Chelsea return to the Amex Stadium tomorrow night with Jorgensen set to be handed another opportunity to impress.

‘Our goalkeeper at the moment is Filip Jorgensen,’ said Maresca, spealking at his pre-match press conference.

‘I said that the Filip solution was also to give Robert Sánchez time to recover mentally and physically but the idea is not to game by game change the keeper.’

Maresca will hope a change between the posts can spark a run of form that would help reignite his side’s push for a top four spot and Champions League qualification.

The Blues were within touching distance of top spot at the turn of the year but results have deteriorated alarmingly.

Despite a worrying run of results, Maresca is adamant that his side are showing signs of improving and are on course to meet their targets for the campaign.

‘Don’t forget, in the last two seasons, Chelsea have never been in the top four,’ he said.

‘This year we’ve spent almost the whole season in the top four. This shows we’re heading in the right direction. We’ll try our best to bring this club where it belongs, in the Champions League.’
