Eddie Hearn’s X-rated assessment of Chris Eubank Sr goes viral following Conor Benn loss
Eddie Hearn has divided the boxing world following a critical review of Chris Eubank Sr on Saturday night. Eubank Sr sent the crowd into bedlam when he made a shock appearance in north London alongside his son, Chris Eubank Jr, who went on to claim a unanimous decision victory over Conor Benn in an all-time British boxing classic. Matchroom Chairman Hearn was ringside for Eubank Jr vs Benn with his dad, BarryGetty Hearn, chairman of Matchroom Boxing and Benn’s promoter, was recorded addressing his fighter after the latter’s devastating defeat inside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, making sure the 28-year-old knew how proud he was of him. “There were two things that were so impressive,” Hearn said. “The chin, the b*******, and the composure. It was mental.” However, Hearn’s next comments have sparked debate among the boxing community, with the general consensus pretty divided. “That f****** lunatic turning up before the fight, then the whole country f****** watching,” Hearn explained, referencing Eubank Sr’s arrival. Several boxing fans rushed to Hearn’s defence in response to the video posted on X. One wrote: “To be fair this is locker room talk in boxing. I’m sure he didn’t mean to insult Sr’s mental health. While another added: “ It’s a figure of speech in the UK and means no disrespect at all. We say s*** like that every day of our lives about people we love and respect. Besides Chris is a f****** lunatic that’s why we love him.” And a third said: “Context probably needed…” On the flip side, others didn’t take too kindly to Hearn’s X-rated assessment. “The only lunatic is Hearn thinking Conor is the people’s champion,” one responded, referencing the former’s emotive words in a post-fight press conference. Hearn was one of Benn’s biggest supporters ahead of his huge fight with Eubank JrGetty But the 28-year-old ultimately fell short to a tight unanimous decision defeatAFP Another added: “If there’s only one lunatic in boxing it is you.” And a third replied: “Who does Eddie think he is calling a legend like Eubank Sr a lunatic?” Reports have suggested that Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh has already booked Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for a September rematch. However, Hearn believes his team need to ‘think very carefully,’ when deciding Benn’s future. “I think they served you up one of the greatest fights we’ve ever seen in this country,” he said during a post-fight press conference. “But for me, the danger was not for Chris Eubank Jr, the danger was for Conor Benn. Hearn used the term ‘f****** lunatic’ when referring to Eubank Sr’s appearance He also said Benn’s camp must ‘think very carefully’ about a rematch down the lineGetty “And that’s why we have got to think very carefully about the rematch, because I don’t want to see too many fights like that. “It’s all very well us sitting here and going, ‘Wow! What a fight! Let’s do it again,’ they’re the kind of fights that will shorten your career, and he’s got such a long career ahead of him.” Benn had moved up two weight classes to contest his first-ever middleweight scrap in the squared circle, while Eubank Jr shredded down to 160lbs. Eubank Jr was rushed to hospital upon medical advice following the bout. Sky Sports have reported that initial tests have come back clear, but he will remain in The Royal London until Monday.
