The Cape Breton Eagles extended their season in the most dramatic way possible.
Trailing their first-round series 3-1, the Eagles defeated the Baie-Comeau Drakkar 3-2 in the fifth overtime period Friday night to avoid elimination. The game, which was played in Sydney, N.S., finished just before 1:30 a.m. local time.
At 1:41:42, it is the second longest game in QMJHL history, only five minutes shorter than the longest game, when Hull beat Victoriaville in five overtimes in 1999.
Angelo Fullerton scored the winner for the Eagles on a breakaway with an assist from Tomas Lavoie.
The Drakkar outshot the Eagles 86-57 in the game. Both goalies played the entire game with Eagles starter Jakub Milota making 84 saves and Drakkar goalie Lucas Beckman made 54 stops.
Game 6 in the series will be Monday.
