Don’t underestimate Liverpool’s easy title win, Arne Slot’s team were the pick of the bunch
Title winners deserve huge credit.

Liverpool will be crowned champions of England for a record-equalling 20th time this weekend*. Clearly Liverpool and fans of the club don’t need me to point out this is kind of a big deal, but is it possible that the rest of us have been lulled into underestimating the scale of this season’s achievement? I think so.
The efficient, near-certain return of the bottom three to their Championship homes has prompted many people to wonder about the future of competitive balance in the Premier League (including me, next week). Add to that the intriguingly incompetent title defence of holders City, Arsenal’s limitations as a title challenger and that Liverpool looked likely to win it as early as the turn of the year, and you find the historic title has the feeling of a sideshow.
Yes, fans of competitive sport tend to prefer competition in their sport, so at this moment the race for Europe is that. And, being completely fair to our attention spans, Liverpool have become less irresistible in the league lately and as they’ve exited various cup competitions.
But it is time for them to get their flowers – and this 20th title is a big win in all senses. Keep your Champions Leagues – the Premier League requires going again and again from mid-August until the end of May, and has been won by only seven different clubs in 33 years.
Lots of those flowers belong to Arne Slot. We’ve talked here before about the tendency for teams to replace one type of manager with his opposite. More than a few carnations should go to those in the Liverpool set-up who identified this course correction instinct and successfully wooed the cousin of the ex.

On Slot’s arrival the high press and attacking movements he developed at Feyenoord were already familiar to Jurgen Klopp’s players, which meant that the squad was set up ready to elevate an existing – and successful – approach.
Even so, winning the title in a season featuring only a single signing (Federico Chiesa, who hasn’t played) shows, yes, the quality and coherence of the squad but also the importance of using your tools as they were designed.
Trent Alexander-Arnold’s defensive frailties may seem annoying but the key to thriving in professional sport is to focus on improving the areas in which you have natural advantages. Forgive the failings, marvel at the double pivot, enjoy winning the title.
Slot had famously never managed outside the Netherlands – a gamble – but in all of his roles he’d helped Dutch clubs punch above their weight and win silverware.
While it is correct to say managing in the Premier League is a step up from any other league in Europe in terms of density of talent, quality of regular opposition and public exposure, finding that Slot can win the league in his first season might give other teams pause.
Especially those who are still trusting the process after three limp title challenges. We know Slot hit the ground running, but that required adaptability, humility and clear-sightedness, which was clear from the way he evaded distractions, and approached the media with restraint.
While City’s irresistible form has proved the sticking point since Liverpool’s last league title, it is not correct to say that their capitulation gifted Liverpool the league. With 79 points heading into the weekend, Slot’s side would have been top at this stage last season too. They could yet reach 94 points.
And if you think that the quality of the league as a whole has dropped off lately well, I get what you mean, but English teams may well make up four of the six available European final spots come May.
Since Liverpool’s first title in 30 years was played out to the sinister silence of Covid, we’ll have to forgive the fans if they’re a little bit annoying about this one. And I hope they enjoy it when it comes, they’ve earned the right!
