‘Doctor Odyssey’ Star Phillipa Soo Says Avery ‘Is Not Sure Where She’s Going to Land’ in Love Triangle
She has "innate deep feelings" for both Max and Tristan The post ‘Doctor Odyssey’ Star Phillipa Soo Says Avery ‘Is Not Sure Where She’s Going to Land’ in Love Triangle appeared first on TheWrap.

Phillipa Soo’s character Avery has decided to keep her baby on “Doctor Odyssey,” but she still hasn’t decided which of the potential fathers she’d rather raise it with: Tristan (Sean Teale) has told her he’s all in whatever she decides while Max (Joshua Jackson) offered to be a stay-at-home dad while she continues her medical career.
What’s a pregnant shipboard doctor- and mother-to-be to do? Soo spoke to TheWrap about the big decisions Avery has already made and how the conversation about what’s best for her and the baby will continue with Max and Tristan.
TheWrap: Avery has decided to keep her baby, but the rest of her love life and work life is kind of up in the air, it seems.
Phillipa Soo: Yeah, although I don’t think the conversation [with Tristan and Max] necessarily ends. What’s lovely about this nuanced relationship is that we get to see a woman trying to make a choice for herself and what she wants. And in the meantime, she has two men beside her who are helping her, supporting her in that moment. I’m really proud of how these three people are trying their best to show up for one another, which I think is really unique in this love triangle. I’m really proud of where we landed with it.
It seemed like Avery was leaning towards Tristan as being the guy for her, and then this last episode, it seemed less definite. Is she still deciding who she wants to be with?
I think you’re very in tune with the different layers that we’ve got going on. One is, what does Avery want for herself and her body and where does she see herself in the future and. And does that involve another person? And does it involve one of these two people?
And meanwhile, there’s some innate deep feelings that she has for both of these men separately. She’s really not sure where she’s going to land. It’s one of those very difficult conversations that she’s going back and forth on because everybody is trying their best to show up. So it’s hard.
During the shark two-parter, when Max was flirting with another female doctor (guest star Adrienne Palicki), it looked like Avery had definitely ruled him out as a future partner.
I always saw her as someone who had to learn how to be extremely independent. She was married previously, and that didn’t work out. I think there’s a lot of armor that she built up that she takes pride in. She was really connected to her job and her vocation and what she wanted to do with her life, and [the pregnancy has] sort of got her out of that. Now that she’s come face to face with the reality that might be the exact opposite of what she’s built up and that scares her.
Max offered to be stay at home with the baby and let her continue with her plans for medical school. Did that take Avery by surprise?
There’s a level of her questioning for herself. Not only, “What do I want?” but “Who do I want that reality to be with?”
I recently talked to Josh and Don and Shaun, they keep saying they want to do a musical episode, mostly to showcase you. How do you feel about that?
I love it. I love musicals. And I love how everybody loves musicals. At least on our set, there’s an innate musicality that everyone has. We all did a really good job at keeping the joy up, and oftentimes that was through song. So I’m all for it. We’ve had a lot of really great actors, theater actors, singers on the show. I think it would only add to our our sparkly daydream to do a Broadway episode.
What kind of songs are being sung on the set?
We’re [mostly] making up songs on set to memorize the very intense medical jargon. Somebody on the crew will [usually] have music playing while setting up. It’s just about creating great energy. I feel really lucky that we got to be on such a lovely, buoyant, joyful set.
Is there a musical that you would like to see happen on the Odyssey?
I think it was the Halloween episode where we’re talking about how Tristan has all of these crazy decorations. And he’s like, “Oh, it’s from the production of Sweeney Todd.” What that would have been like to have a Sweeney Todd production on this cruise, knowing that they probably would have gone all out? The budget would have been huge. It would have been amazing.
“Doctor Odyssey” airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT and streams the next day on Hulu.
