Demi Moore has looked back on her awards season campaign in a new interview, saying she didn’t feel “gutted” to lose out on the Best Actress Oscar.
The star won critical acclaim and a Golden Globe for The Substance, a sci-fi horror about a fading star who takes a black-market drug in order to produce a younger, idealised version of herself (Margaret Qualley). She was considered the favourite for the Academy Award, but lost out to Anora star Mikey Madison.
In an interview with Time magazine, Moore said she “knew” she wasn’t going to win during the commercial break before the category was called. “I leaned over and whispered to my manager, ‘I think it’s going to Mikey,’” she said. “I don’t know why I knew, but I did.”
When that came to pass, she said she was “centered and calm,” adding: “I didn’t feel gutted. I didn’t feel any of those kinds of things. I just trusted, and am in trust of, whatever is going to unfold”.
She also looked back on her Globes speech, in which she recalled a time when a former agent called her a “popcorn actress” not worthy of awards. “At that time I made that mean that this wasn’t something that I was allowed to have, that I could do movies that were successful, that made a lot of money,” she said. “But that I couldn’t be acknowledged and I bought in and I believed that. And that corroded me over a time”.
Demi Moore now sees her win as a “marker of my wholeness and of the love that is driving me and for the gift of doing something I love and being reminded that I do belong”.
Recently, Best Actress winner Mikey Madison poked fun at her Anora dance skills while hosting Saturday Night Live.
