With a late first-period goal against the New York Islanders, Crosby registered his 1,670th point to take sole possession of fourth on the all-time list for points with one franchise.
Gretzky scored 1,669 points in nine seasons with the Edmonton Oilers.
Crosby, 37, is in his 20th season with the Penguins after the team drafted him first overall in the 2005 NHL Draft.
The long-time Penguins captain now trails only Mario Lemieux (1,723 with Penguins), Steve Yzerman (1,755 with Red Wings) and Gordie Howe (1,809 with Red Wings) in the record books.
Tuesday’s goal was Crosby’s 24th of the 2024-25 season to go along with 50 assists.
