Butthole Surfers prep ‘Live At The Leather Fly’ LP (hear “The Annoying Song”)

Butthole Surfers have announced Live at The Leather Fly which will be out May 9 via Sunset Blvd Records (preorder). This live recording is a bit mysterious, with the exact whens and wheres a bit murky, but judging by the tracklist it probably falls somewhere around the release of 1993’s Independent Worm Saloon, which was their first album for major label Capitol Records. (It is still weird to think Butthole Surfers were on a major label, let alone had a hit.) The title comes from a bit of band lore, says Paul Leary:  “Back in the 80s Gibby used to fantasize about a nightclub called the Leather Fly. He wanted it to have a stuffed leather fly hanging in front of it. There were two [fictional] competing promoters on the scene, Steak Watson and Lady Corn Wilson.”

Says Leary, “We were invited to participate in the first Lollapalooza Festival in its premier tour of 1991. At some point of the tour Gibby got a hold of a toy battery-powered small megaphone that pitched his voice up.  He was annoying everyone within earshot backstage speaking through it in a rhythmic manner, and I found it hysterical enough to write music to it. It became ‘The Annoying Song.'” Watch the video for that below.

Last year, Matador reissued remastered Butthole Surfers albums from their pre-Capitol Records years, including Locust Abortion Technician, Rembrant Pussyhorse, Hairway to Steven and more.
