Built for this: Horschel leads charge for Atlanta’s inaugural SoFi Cup win

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. — You don’t really think someone could be built for golf that’s played in a stadium with balls hit into a 50-foot-high screen and a green that weighs over 500,000 pounds and rotates 360 degrees. But as it turns out, this is Billy Horschel’s world and we’re just living in it.

Horschel led Atlanta Drive GC to a come-from-behind victory in the second match of the best-of-three TGL final series to help Atlanta win the inaugural SoFi Cup over New York Golf Club.

Atlanta won the second match 4-3 and won the final series 2-0.

On the penultimate hole Tuesday, Horschel had a 17-foot birdie try after his team hadn’t made a putt between 10 and 20 feet all night long. It was, very likely, the toughest putt on the green — a slippery double-breaker that hadn’t been made all season. But Horschel had a good feeling, he said, and the putt went through its multiple breaks and found the bottom of the cup.

Horschel then dropped his putter, unleashed some fist pumps, and dropped his hat in a jubilant celebration.

“Blackout moments,” Horschel said. “I don’t ever plan it. It just happens.”

That put Atlanta up 4-3 and when Cameron Young of New York Golf Club couldn’t convert a greenside chip on No. 15, the match, and the series final, was over.

New York had a chance when Young stepped up to the tee on the last hole and threw the hammer before Young and Patrick Cantlay hit their tee shots. Cantlay went up-and-down for birdie before Young left himself short-sided.

Atlanta was never really out of it, despite being down 3-0 through 11 holes — as it kept all three of its hammers to that point. The match was fairly even through six holes at 0-0, the latest a TGL match had been scoreless all season long.

As the teams got closer to the conclusion of singles the temperature was turned up a bit as Xander Schauffele threw the hammer at nearly the same time Justin Thomas addressed his ball prior to an 11-foot par putt to tie the hole. For one of the only times all season there needed to be a booth review, where rules official Mark Russell declared that Thomas hadn’t “totally addressed the ball,” meaning it would stand.

Atlanta ended up declining the hammer and New York took a 2-0 lead entering No. 9, the final hole of triples.

But Atlanta was somewhat known for its hammer strategy through the season, winning 21 points after hammer throws through the 2025 campaign — which was first in TGL by a wide margin.

Cantlay was quick to praise team manager Ben Helmrath, who was the “mastermind” behind the hammer strategy.

“Ben was out here earlier than any of us rolling balls on the green,” Cantlay said. “He was critically important.

“Ben was so much more prepared than any of us that he just made it so easy for us to prepare and get ready for our matches. He was a pleasure to be with all year, and he was a very integral part of our team.”

For New York, it was an impressive run through the latter part of 2025 after the team lost its first two matches. They went on a 3-0-1 run to make it to the final and lost both of the finals matches on the last hole, 6-5 on Monday night and 4-3 Tuesday night.

“It’s been a lot of fun, and obviously now and the in the moment with where we are, it sucks, but at the same time, have to look back and look at the 0-2 start… it’s been fun to grow with these guys and all get better and put ourselves in this position,” Fowler said.

It was Fowler who eventually fell to Horschel after his incredible putt on No. 14, but it came after, potentially, a bit of foreshadowing from Lucas Glover.

Glover, part of Atlanta Drive but who was sitting on the sidelines through the finale, said on the broadcast that all his team needed was to see one putt go in and they’d be off to the races.

Turns out Horschel’s putt came a little late, but it was exactly what Atlanta needed. And, at 17 feet, 10 inches, it was the longest putt Horschel had made in TGL all season.

Built for this, indeed.

“I never imagined we’d be playing golf in an arena with a big simulator and people and music and chanting,” Horschel admitted, “but it’s been really cool and has sort of exceeded all of our expectations.”
