‘Break that tie’ – Flau’jae Johnson lays down gauntlet to Caitlin Clark ahead of WNBA Draft decision
Flau’jae Johnson is ready to make her mark for the LSU Tigers in the 2025 NCAA tournament. The 21-year-old has developed into LSU’s newest superstar and has filled the void Angel Reese left when she entered the WNBA last year. Johnson will hope to win her second NCAA Division I title with LSU in 2025Getty Averaging 18.9 points, 5.8 assists and 2.4 rebounds this season, Johnson is looking to inspire the Tigers to another March Madness victory – their last coming just two years ago against Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes. While she missed the final game of the regular season and the entire SEC Tournament with shin inflammation, LSU earned the No. 3 seed in Spokane Region 1 and is set to face off against the No. 14 seeded San Diego State Aztecs on Saturday. Coach Kim Mulkey has said that Johnson is ‘good to go’ for the big dance, and ahead of the first round, the young star has discussed her college basketball battles against Clark, who has gone on to become the WNBA’s top draw. She also offered a warning for when the pair eventually meet in the pro league. “I played Clark my freshman year and my sophomore year,” Johnson said in an interview with Complex. “I’m a junior, and so first year, freshman year, we got it. Second year, she got me. “Me and Caitlin, we 1-1 right now. I got to wait until I get into the league to break that tie.” While Johnson has thrown down the gauntlet to Clark, she also went on to admit that the Indiana Fever star is the toughest opponent she’s had to face on the court. Johnson said: “She’s definitely the hardest opponent I’ve ever had to play. “She was able to just facilitate. She’s like the best passer I think I’ve ever played against, ever in my life.” Johnson is looking to ‘break a tie’ with Clark in the WNBA after the pair clashed in collegeGetty As Johnson mentions, she currently has one win and one loss against WNBA superstar Clark. The victory came in her Freshman year, when LSU beat Iowa 102-85 in the National Championship Game in April 2023. Johnson herself finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists. One year later though, the Hawkeyes got their revenge, defeating LSU in the Elite Eight. Iowa won that game 94-87, and soon-to-be WNBA first overall pick Clark dropped 41 points, while Johnson led the Tigers with 23 points of her own.
