Blue Jays’ Daulton Varsho to play full games as next step of shoulder rehab

The Toronto Blue Jays may slowly be getting healthier.

Outfielder Daulton Varsho, who missed the beginning of the season after September shoulder surgery, is headed to extended spring training and plans to play full games next week, Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith reported.

It marks the next step in Varsho’s rehab, who has been hitting but has yet to make full throws from the outfield.

If all goes well in Florida, Varsho could move up to triple-A for some games before returning to the Blue Jays.

Meanwhile, three Blue Jays pitchers are slowly progressing back to the mound.

Starter Max Scherzer, who has been out with a right thumb injury since leaving his Toronto debut after just three innings, continued throwing Saturday after additional imaging on Friday checked out fine.

“We’re just taking it day-to-day and seeing how he feels,” Blue Jays manager John Schneider said.

The plan for reliever Erik Swanson (elbow) is to face live hitters next week, with a minor-league rehab assignment to follow. Ryan Burr (shoulder) threw a bullpen on Saturday.

The Blue Jays also laid out their plans for the rotation during a three-game series that starts Monday at home against the Atlanta Braves.

While Friday’s rainout in Baltimore could have re-shuffled things, Toronto will continue on turn with Easton Lucas, Kevin Gausman and Chris Bassitt lined up to face the Braves.

The Blue Jays return to action against the Orioles on Saturday at 4:05 p.m. ET / 1:05 p.m. PT. Live coverage is available on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+.
