Blue Jays’ Daulton Varsho scratched vs. Guardians with low back tightness

Daulton Varsho was a late scratch from the Toronto Blue Jays‘ lineup ahead of Sunday’s rubber match against the Cleveland Guardians.

After initially being scheduled to bat fifth and play centre field, Toronto announced that Varsho had been removed from the starting lineup with low back tightness.

Alan Roden slid into the Blue Jays’ starting nine, batting seventh and playing left field. Defensively, Nathan Lukes will shift over to handle the duties in centre.

Varsho has played in five games for Toronto this season since returning from the injured list after undergoing off-season shoulder surgery.

The reigning AL Gold Glove winner in centre field is slashing .214/.353/.643 with two homers, three walks and one stolen base to begin his 2025 campaign.

After losing the lead late in Sunday’s loss to the Guardians, the Blue Jays are turning to Bowden Francis in hopes of saving a series win against Cleveland.

First pitch is scheduled for 1:37 p.m. ET / 10:37 a.m. PT. You can catch all the action on Sportsnet or Sportsnet+.
