Blue Jays announce early spring training starters, Scherzer to pitch Tuesday

Toronto Blue Jays baseball is getting underway again.

Ahead of their first spring training game on Saturday, the Blue Jays announced their starters for the first four games of pre-season action.

Getting the nod in the February opener against the New York Yankees will be Easton Lucas, followed by Yariel Rodriguez on Sunday and Bowden Francis on Monday.

The marquee showcase will be Tuesday against the St. Louis Cardinals, where the Blue Jays will send top acquisition Max Scherzer to the mound in tandem with Jose Berrios.

You can watch exclusive Blue Jays spring training coverage on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+, beginning Feb. 22 at 1 p.m. ET / 10 a.m. PT.

Meanwhile, left-handed pitching prospect Adam Macko will be sidelined indefinitely after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his knee Thursday morning, per manager John Schneider. Macko was diagnosed with a meniscus tear in his right knee on Monday after he tweaked it over the weekend.

The Blue Jays acquired the six-foot southpaw from the Seattle Mariners alongside Erik Swanson in exchange for Teoscar Hernandez in the 2022 off-season.

Macko, a Slovakia-born, Alberta-raised prospect has worked his way up the organizational ladder since joining the Jays.

Macko spent the entirety of the 2023 campaign pitching in high-A for the Vancouver Canadians and moved up to double-A New Hampshire in 2024. Over 81.1 innings with the Fisher Cats, Macko posted a 4.87 ERA and 3.72 FIP with 90 strikeouts and 30 walks.
