Following its launch debut in November last year, the Deepal E07 is now on display at this year’s Bangkok International Motor Show (BIMS). The electric SUV that doubles as a pick-up truck is offered in two variants in Thailand, namely the Plus that retails for 1.699 million baht (about RM222k) and Performance AWD at 2.099 million baht (RM274k) – these figures are after local subsidies.

Both variants are equipped with a nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery that has an energy capacity of 89.98 kWh. The Plus gets a gets a rear-mounted electric motor rated at 342 PS (338 hp or 252 kW) and 365 Nm of torque, which is good for a 0-100 km/h time of 6.7 seconds and top speed of 201 km/h.

Meanwhile, the Performance AWD gains a front electric motor rated at 256 PS (252 hp or 188 kW) and 280 Nm while retaining the same rear motor as the Plus. As a result, the total system output is 598 PS (590 hp or 440 kW) and 645 Nm, which sees a faster century sprint time of 3.96 seconds and a higher top speed of 210 km/h. The compromise of the all-wheel drive system is range, with the Performance AWD offering up to 590 km following the NEDC standard – the Plus will do 640 km. AC charging is capped at 6.6 kW and the maximum DC input is 240 kW, the latter allowing the battery to get from a 30-80% state of charge in just 15 minutes. A vehicle-to-load (V2L) system is also standard.

While both variants of the E07 come with double wishbones at the front and a rear H-arm multi-link setup, only the Performance AWD benefits from air suspension with continuous damping control. As for equipment, it is identical for the entire range.

Standard kit includes 21-inch wheels (with 265/45 profile tyres), flush door handles, LED DRLs, automatic LED headlamps, roof rails, black body cladding, electric adjustment for the steering wheel, powered zero-gravity front seats with ventilation function, a 60:40 split-folding rear bench, 256-colour ambient lighting, dual-zone climate control, an 18-speaker sound system and a 50W wireless charging pad.

You won’t find a traditional instrument cluster or many physical buttons inside the cabin, with nearly every vehicle function accessed via the large 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen, which also shows critical driving information.

The things that make the E07 unique are its powered tailgate and electrically retractable glass window over the bed – there’s also a frunk. It’s hard to find a direct rival to the E07, although car-derived pick-ups like the Hyundai Santa Cruz and Fiat Strada can be deemed as close competitors.

Three exterior colours are available for both variants of the E07, including Obsidian Black, Quartz White and Hematite Grey. The Performance AWD gains an additional Jade Green option and its interior gets an orange theme, the latter being different to the Plus which gets a black cabin.

In terms of dimensions, the E07 measures 5,045 mm long, 1,996 mm wide, 1,680 mm tall and has a wheelbase of 3,120 mm. Compared to ladder-frame pick-up trucks like the Toyota Hilux, Mitsubishi Triton and Isuzu D-Max, which are cheaper, the Deepal electric vehicle (EV) has a lesser overall length. The load capacity is also said to be about 300 kg, which is inferior to pick-ups mentioned.

At BIMS 2025, Changan, the company that owns the Deepal brand, is offering the E07 with a starting price of 1.599 million baht (RM209), presumably to attract buyers. The promo also includes free internet for 10 years and a premium care package – the Performance AWD gets an added 10-year, 200,000-km warranty. There’s also a lifestyle package worth 60,000 baht (RM7.8k) limited to the first 500 customers, with two options to choose from that consists of a drone as well as camping equipment or bicycle set and vouchers.

The E07 is a very unorthodox vehicle that aims to combine an SUV with a pick-up truck, albeit at a cost. Would you want something like this in Malaysia or is it too quirky (and expensive) to even consider over a traditional pick-up truck?
