Alan Shearer fought back tears thinking of his late father as Newcastle United clinched the Carabao Cup at Wembley.

Newcastle ended their 55-year wait for major silverware after beating Liverpool 2-1 at the home of English football thanks to goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak.

Shearer, the Premier League’s all-time top scorer, spent 10 years at his boyhood club, twice going to Wembley only to taste defeat on both occasions in FA Cup final defeats to Arsenal and Manchester United.

The former England international lost his father last year following a cancer diagnosis. With his children by his side at Wembley on Sunday, Shearer took a moment to remember his dad who ‘would have been looking down’ as his club lifted the trophy.

‘I must admit, I had a tear or two in my eye when the final whistle went because I thought of my old man,’ Shearer told The Rest is Football.

‘He was lucky enough to go the 1969 final when they won the Fairs Cup so he sort of sampled it a bit but I just wish he had been there.

‘But he would have been looking down. Even in his last few days he was going on about Newcastle, how he wanted them to do well and win a trophy.

‘But me and Will, my daughter Chloe and her boyfriend were all at the game yesterday so we gave him a little nod.’

Shearer had gushing praise for the entire Newcastle team that toppled the Premier League leaders, hailing Tino Livramento for ‘not giving Mohamed Salah a kick’ in what was an excellent defensive performance from the full-back.

Shearer shared a pint with Dan Burn, whose towering header opened the scoring, after the game, joking the Blythe-born defender should retire from the game this week after that triumph, despite getting a maiden England call-up.

‘All over the pitch they won every single battle,’ Shearer said.

‘It was such a big thing, we had the worry at left-back but Livramento did not give Salah a kick.

‘Harvey Barnes on the left instead of Anthony Gordon, what a night for him.

‘Joeltinton, oh my God, a beast of a performance. He is horrible to play against. he was everywhere.

‘Where do we start with big Dan Burn?’ Shearer continued. ‘I said to him last night when we were having a pint, I said to him, you might as well f*****g retire man.

‘The week you’ve had it’s not going to be any better than that.

‘It’s typical, Newcastle players have all gone off to Dubai, all going as a team, and I said to Dan, its typical you can’t have five or six days break in the sun now. And he said, “I don’t give a damn, I can’t wait to get out for England.”’
