Story Kitchen and Toys ‘R’ Us Studios are teaming to develop a live-action film based on the famed toy story chain.
Currently in early development, the project aims to “capture that childhood wonder in a modern, fast-paced adventure”. Not surprisingly, the toy store’s brand will play a big part of the action.
Producers are engaging in preliminary conversations with filmmakers, with casting and additional details to be announced in coming months.
In terms of tone though, the project has been described as in line with “Night at the Museum” Back to the Future” with the hope of those involved being that this will become the next “Jumanji” or even “Barbie” style hit.
Kim Miller Olko, president of Toys’R’Us Studios, says in a statement:
“As Toys’R’Us’ first film, this project is an exciting opportunity to bring the magic of our brand to the big screen. It will be a journey as boundless as play itself, evoking the electric sense of wonder that is the essence of Toys’R’Us. This story will capture the imagination, adventure and joy that has made Toys’R’Us a destination for kids of all ages.”
Story Kitchen has had experience in adaptation before, producing the Netflix “Tomb Raider” animated series and currently working on multiple game-to-film adaptations including “It Takes Two,” “Just Cause,” “Sifu,” “Streets of Rage,” “Ruiner” and “Toejam and Earl”.
