Sydney Sweeney is reportedly teaming up with Michael Bay for a big screen adaptation of classic video game OutRun.

The first OutRun game was released in arcades in 1986 with players needing to drive a Ferrari Testarossa to one of five destinations before time runs out. The influential game was praised for its pioneering hardware and graphics, nonlinear gameplay and Hiroshi Kawaguchi’s synthwave soundtrack.

OutRun went on to become the highest grossest arcade game of 1987 and was eventually ported to a number of consoles where it sold millions of copies. A sequel was released in 2003 and OutRun 2006: Coast To Coast followed in 2006.

Game designer Yu Suzuki was inspired by 1981 film The Cannonball Run for OutRun and reportedly wasn’t a fan of driving games where cars exploded when people crashed.

According to Deadline, Michael Bay is set to direct the OutRun movie while Sydney Sweeney has signed on as a producer. The script is currently being written by Jayson Rothwell (Silent Night, Malice In Wonderland) and Sega President Shuji Utsumi will oversee the project. Plot details and casting news hasn’t been released yet.

“For some reason I don’t hate this? Could be fire honestly,” one fan wrote on X. “An OutRun movie??? I don’t care if it’s gonna be bad, I will be in the theater day one and I’m gonna treat it like it’s the greatest movie that ever graced our eyes,” added another.

However other fans are less excited about the news. “They’re doing everything but rereleasing OutRun 2006,” said one X user. “Of all the properties to adapt, why this,” wrote another.

Earlier this month it was reported that Sydney Sweeney was in “final talks” to star in the movie adaptation of popular ‘80s franchise Gundam. Speaking to NME in 2023, Sweeney said “I like to switch it up and kind of confuse people with what genre I’m doing. I kind of like that I’m throwing people off.”

The OutRun movie follows the success of A Minecraft Movie, which has taken over social media and become the most successful film of 2025 so far, despite mixed reviews Last week, Jack Black’s Minecraft song ‘Steve’s Lava Chicken’ became the shortest single to ever enter the UK Top 40.

In other news, the team behind Frostpunk has confirmed two new games are currently being developed following the success of Frostpunk 2.
