Nissan is refocusing its efforts around its e-Power hybrid powertrain, with a new third generation of the system being developed. Its spearhead, at least in some markets, is the all-new fifth-gen X-Trail, which will debut in North America next year as the Rogue.
A teaser image for the new C-segment SUV shows a car with a similar shape to the current model, albeit with a front end very much in the mould of newer Nissan SUVs such as the facelifted Qashqai. It’s certainly distinctive, with five-a-side LED daytime running lights nicely integrated into the wide V-shaped grille. Deviating from the split design of the fourth-gen X-Trail, the slim projector headlights are mounted high up on a separate strip, similar to the new Murano.
The X-Trail will debut Nissan’s e-Power system in the US as a course correction, having admitted to misreading the demand for petrol-electric vehicles in the States.
The new third-gen powertrain will utilise a dedicated 1.5 litre engine (replacing the existing VC-Turbo unit), juicing a new five-in-one electric motor that shares key components with the company’s latest full-electric powertrains. As with the current system, only the electric motor drives the wheels.
Aside from the e-Power version, the X-Trail will also be offered in petrol form and, eventually, a plug-in hybrid. Such is the dysfunction within Nissan that the company is scrambling to get a PHEV model out the door first, and despite the current X-Trail already being based on the Mitsubishi Outlander, the Rogue PHEV will instead be a rebadged Outlander PHEV.
Don’t expect the new X-Trail to be launched here any time soon. It took at least a year for the current Rogue to be sold outside the US, and such is the idiosyncratic nature of both Nissan’s Asian business and local distributor Edaran Tan Chong Motor (ETCM) that the fourth-gen is only making its way to Malaysia this year.
