Rachel Zegleris an anomaly in young Hollywood. She was plucked from obscurity in 2018 after an open casting call audition landed her the coveted role of Mariah in Steven Spielberg's ambitious remake of the 1961 musical West Side Story. The film was widely praised by critics, and earned Ariana DeBose an Oscar award for Best Supporting Actress and a Best Director nomination for Spielberg. Zegler, meanwhile, was ostracized for pointing out that although she had not received a nomination that year, as the leading role in the film she would have appreciated an invitation to the event to cheer on her co-star and director.
