Which Kubrick Movie Inspired Tarantino's 'Reservoir Dogs'?
Stanley Kubrick is an icon in filmmaking. His movies have inspired countless individuals to pursue filmmaking. I love hearing when you heroes talk about their heroes, it gives a generational quality to the craft of filmmaking that makes this all feel familial.I was digging through old news articles the other day and found this crazy 1992 interview with Quentin Tarantino and The Seattle Times. In it, Tarantino talked about Stanley Kubrick and how his movie, The Killing, inspired Reservoir Dogs. He said, “I didn’t go out of my way to do a rip-off of The Killing, but I did think of it as my Killing, my take on that kind of heist movie." - YouTube www.youtube.com And at the Cannes premiere of the movie, Tarantino doubled down, saying, “The Killing is my favourite heist film, and I was definitely influenced by it." Now, this is a funny comparison because, including story and theme, these movies have a ton in common. Both were the directors' first real studio features that they directed. They were crime movies that helped introduce them to the town and showed they could work with stars. They're also both movies that have lived on to be studied and admired, that have inspired more people after them. I actually think Kubrick and Tarantino have a lot in common as filmmakers. They are both visionaries who are very precise with their cameras and in knowing what they want on screen. Let me know what you think in the comments.
