There are fears Lucas Bergvall could be ruled out for the remainder of the season after the Tottenham midfielder was pictured on crutches ahead of the side’s Europa League semi-final first leg with Bodo/Glimt.

Bergvall played the full 90 minutes of Spurs’ 5-1 defeat to Liverpool last weekend and had been expected to continue his run in the side at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this evening.

However, eyebrows were raised as the 19-year-old was omitted from the hosts’ matchday squad, with Ange Postecoglou making six changes to his team that was thrashed at Anfield.

The teenager has made 45 appearances in all competitions for Tottenham since arriving from Djurgarden last summer and has been one of the club’s few shining lights in the second half of the campaign.

But it looks likely Bergvall has played his final game this term after he was seen wearing a protective boot and walking with the aid of crutches as he made his way out of the tunnel ahead of kick-off.

Postecoglou later revealed that the Sweden international had picked up an ankle injury, which had left the youngster ‘hugely disappointed’.

‘Unfortunately, for Lucas, he picked up an injury in training yesterday,’ the Tottenham head coach told reporters.

Subs: Austin, Whiteman, Spence, Danso, Davies, Gray, Sarr, Kulusevski, Moore, Odobert, Tel

‘He just tweaked his ankle unfortunately and he misses out tonight.

‘It is disappointing for him because he’s been outstanding for us this year.

‘Obviously he’s hugely disappointed with that but, unfortunately, he misses out.’

It comes just days after Bergvall put pen to paper on a new contract with Tottenham, tying him to the club until 2031.

Explaining his decision to extend his stay in north London, Bergvall told Spurs’ official website: ‘It’s a club with great ambitions.

‘I’m really enjoying being here and playing for this amazing football club.

‘Short-term, Europa League. Of course the goal is to win everything. And that’s what we try to do. Now we go on Thursday.’

Bergvall added: ‘I’ve learned a lot.

‘Coming to a new country, a new culture, of course I had Deki [Dejan Kulusevski] helping me a lot in the beginning but still, living on your own, making food and everything… it’s not only to be a footballer to train every day, it’s everything around it.

‘You have to take care of the car, the house or apartment… everything really, so I think I’ve developed a lot as a person as well as a player.’
