BYD was the best-selling electric vehicle (EV) brand in Malaysia in April 2025, according to vehicle registration data released by the road transport department (JPJ). With a multi-vehicle line-up, the Chinese brand saw 1,048 registrations last month to bring its year-to-date (YTD) total to 3,207 units.

In second place is Proton with a YTD total of 2,537 units as of the end of April this year. While still behind BYD, it is an impressive feat given the local company sells just one EV, the eMas 7, which managed its highest single-month result so far with 799 units last month.

Meanwhile, the third best-selling EV brand in Malaysia in April was Denza (157 units in April, 395 YTD), which is followed closely behind by Xpeng (153 units, 380 YTD), BMW (119 units, 587 YTD) and Tesla (108 units, 735 YTD) as the only brands to hit triple-digit registrations.

Zeekr (91 units, 360 YTD) came close to hitting 100 units but fell well short of what it achieved in March 2025, while further away from the mark are Chery (45 units, 97 YTD) and Porsche (45 units, 208 YTD), the latter likely to include recon cars that are counted by the JPJ.

Completing the top 10 is GWM (44 units, 145 YTD) that managed to be placed ahead of Mercedes-Benz (40 units, 129 YTD) in 11th place. From there, we have MG (37 units, 192 YTD) in 12th, Volvo (37 units, 122 YTD) in 13th, Hyundai (36 units, 100 YTD) in 14th, MINI (34 units, 154 YTD) in 15th, Dongfeng (24 units, 45 YTD) in 16th, Neta (17 units, 50 YTD) in 17th and smart (17 units, 101 YTD) in 18th.

In the lower half of the rankings, Lotus managed to pass the 10-unit mark with 11 units in April 2025 – its highest single-month result – for a YTD total of 18 units. On the flipside, Leapmotor in 20th saw its lowest single-month posting with just eight units for a YTD total of 69 units.
