Tom Hanks and his son Chet have teamed up to recreate Forrest Gump for a new music video. Check it out below.
The video accompanies the song ‘You Better Run’, which is the second single for Chet’s country duo Something Out West – comprised of him and Drew Arthur.
Chet reprises his father’s role in the 1994 Oscar-winning film, recreating iconic moments, including the famous bench opening scene, the running sequence and Gump’s stint on a shrimping boat named ‘Jenny’, which the band perform on in the video.
Towards the end of the video, Tom appears on the bench alongside his son, holding his head in his hands and looking confused before eventually seeming to come around to the concept. Check it out below.
Chet and Arthur formed Something Out West during their time as roommates in California, as they both began a journey towards sobriety.
The friendship evolved into musical collaboration and songwriting sessions, leading to them signing with Nashville-based label Big Machine Records in February.
They released their debut single ‘Leaving Hollywood’ the same month. “We’re thrilled to partner with Big Machine and Scott Borchetta,” Chet Hanks said in a press release at the time.
“The support they’ve shown for ‘Leaving Hollywood’ and the rest of the music has been incredible. Drew and I have been making music together for a long time, and we feel really proud to have a home at Big Machine for this upcoming project.”
The duo is currently in the studio with producer Julian Raymond, working on their debut album slated for release later this year.
It follows Chet’s previous rap single ‘White Boy Summer’, released as a play on Megan Thee Stallion’s ‘Hot Girl Summer’ from 2019.
The tongue-in-cheek message of his song was soon turned into a piece of far-right rhetoric, used by the likes the Proud Boys and other extreme groups across the world.
Chet condemned any racist or bigoted behaviour his song has inadvertently inspired, saying: “White boy summer was created to be fun, playful, and a celebration of fly white boys who love beautiful queens of every race. Anything else that it has been twisted into to support any kind of hate or bigotry against any group of people is deplorable and I condemn it,” he wrote.
Elsewhere, last May Chet revealed that his father had asked him via text to explain the ongoing rap feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar.
Tom Hanks messaged his son: “Big Main, can you explain the Drake/Kendrick Lamar feud to me?”. Chet then replied with a long block of text, explaining the situation to his father. Chet summarised the feud, suggesting that he thinks Kendrick Lamar came out as the victor.
