We first reported on Deeper, a spec script by Max Landis (Chronicle, Bright), way back in 2006. MGM won the bidding war for the rights but it has yet to move forward despite attaching several big names — including Bradley Cooper, Gal Gadot, and Idris Elba — in the years since.
But if anyone can get a movie made, it’s Tom Cruise — and Deadline is reporting that he’d like to make the aquatic supernatural thriller his next project.
The story follows an astronaut who encounters a terrifying force while on a deep dive into a never-before-explored trench.
Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow, The Bourne Identity) is set to direct, with Christopher McQuarrie (Top Gun: Maverick, The Usual Suspects) involving in re-writing the script.
Ana de Armas (Knives Out, Blade Runner 2049) is attached to co-star. She and Cruise have reportedly been undergoing the required diving training for the movie.
The budget is estimated to be in the $200 million range, which is the biggest hurdle in getting the green light.
