Tiger Woods, Jupiter Links look to cap TGL season with win over Atlanta Drive

We’ve reached the regular-season finale of the inaugural TGL season and although the playoff picture is essentially set, there’s still a chance for some last-minute movement if Atlanta Drive GC can make some history.

Atlanta Drive can secure the No. 2 spot in the playoffs if they win at least 10 holes versus Jupiter Links on Tuesday. It will be a tall task, however, as the most number of holes won by a team in a single match so far is nine.

With New York Golf Club’s win Monday night against Boston Common Golf, Jupiter Links has officially been eliminated from the playoffs.

Tiger Woods makes his return to TGL after missing the last Jupiter Links match. It is, potentially, a warm-up to his PGA Tour return at The Players Championship next week.

Here’s everything else you need to know about Tuesday’s clash.

THE MATCH

Jupiter Links GC: Tom Kim, Tiger Woods, Max Homa (sitting: Kevin Kisner) vs. Atlanta Drive GC: Billy Horschel, Lucas Glover, Nick Dunlap on a one-match contract (unavailable: Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantlay)

NOTES

With Cantlay and Thomas (a pair of former FedExCup champions) unavailable for Tuesday’s match, Dunlap has signed a one-match contract for Atlanta.

Dunlap won The American Express last year, becoming the first amateur to win on the PGA Tour since 1991. He then went on to win the Barracuda Championship in July, becoming the first golfer in PGA Tour history to win as both an amateur and a professional in the same season. He would go on to win PGA Tour Rookie of the Year honours for 2024.

This is Glover’s second TGL start of the season. He’s 3-for-3 in hitting the fairway, one of just four golfers this season to hit 100 per cent of his fairways

Horschel has been a singles machine so far this season, having won the most points (six) out of anyone in TGL.

Kim looks to continue his impressive statistical TGL campaign, as he sits first in strokes gained: total amongst all golfers in TGL.

PLAYOFF DETAILS

The top four teams from the regular season (LAGC, The Bay, Atlanta Drive, and New York) will advance to the playoffs, beginning on March 17.

The playoffs will begin with a single-elimination semifinals and move on to a best-of-three final.

LAGC secured the No. 1 spot Monday with its win over The Bay. Atlanta could leap The Bay for No. 2 if it wins at least 10 holes against Jupiter Links.

New York will be the No. 4 seed no matter the result of Tuesday’s match.

SCORING EXPLANATION VIA TGL

Modern Match Play

• Each hole has a value of one point and the team with the fewest shots on a hole wins the point.

• Ties are worth zero points and there are no carryovers

• The Hammer (NEW) – Each hole is worth one point unless a team throws the Hammer. Each team will begin the match with three Hammers. Playing the Hammer raises the stakes of a hole by one point when played and accepted. Teams can only throw the Hammer once on a given hole but are otherwise free to use them at any point in the match to up the ante. The maximum number of points on offer per hole is now three (should each team throw a Hammer that is accepted by their opponent). The new rules mean each team will always get the opportunity to throw the Hammer during a match.

• The team with the most points wins the match.

• Each match will be played until all 15 holes are completed, even if the match outcome has been decided. A team’s total number of holes won will be used as a tiebreaker in the SoFi Cup Standings at the end of the regular season.

Format/sessions

Within a match there will be two sessions played in two different formats:

• Triples – 9 holes – Three players per team competing in an alternate-shot format.

• Singles– 6 holes – One-on-one, head-to-head competition for the entire hole. Each player from each team plays a total of two full holes during the session.

• Overtime – If the match is tied after 15 holes, the teams will play a best-of-three, closest-to-the-pin competition to decide the winner. This will be similar to penalty kicks in soccer.

• The hole location and orientation of the green will remain unchanged from the final/15th hole of the match.

• The shot distance will be between 25-50 yards and decided pre-match by our match official. All players will play from the same spot. The ball must finish on the putting surface to be eligible.

SoFi Cup standings

• Similar to the NHL, TGL presented by SoFi will use a points-based system for the SoFi Cup Standings.

• For each match, teams can be awarded up to 2 points towards their regular-season total based on the following:

Win in regulation = 2 points
Win in overtime = 2 points
Loss in overtime = 1 point
Loss in regulation = 0 points
