Marvel Studios’ “Thunderbolts” opens this Friday in the U.S., but has already begun rolling out in international territories and is all set for a solid debut.
Box-office projections have the film on track for a $175 million worldwide start – around $70-75 million domestically and $90-100 million abroad. Should estimates go higher, the film will make back its $180 million production budget by end of Sunday.
Domestic presales are at just over $12 million, beating “Shang-Chi” which opened to $75.3 million, and on par with “Eternals” which opened to $71.2 million.
The film’s Rotten Tomatoes score with critics has dropped to 89%, about on par with the first “Doctor Strange,” a huge improvement on “Captain America: Brave New World” at 48%, and the best score for an MCU film since “Spider-Man: No Way Home” snagged 93% back in late 2021.
It helps the film has the market to itself, no real other newcomers until “Final Destination: Bloodlines” on May 16th and then “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” on May 23rd.
It has also been confirmed that the post-credits sequence of the film clocks in at 2 minutes 54 seconds, the longest of any MCU film to date. The sequence has already leaked online but is very quickly being taken down by Marvel.
Meanwhile, “Sinners” is still expected to fare well in its third weekend domestically which is expected to fall around 25-30% to $32-34 million. Roadside Attractions’ “The Surfer” starring Nicolas Cage is heading for a $1+ million opening.
