A Friends star has revealed that she thinks the late Matthew Perry has visited her as a hawk – find out who it is and what she had to say below.
Perry was found unresponsive in a hot tub in his Los Angeles home on October 28, 2023, with his death at the age of 54 being attributed to the acute effects of ketamine, with drowning and coronary artery disease listed as other factors.
In a new episode of the Still Here podcast with Steve Kmetko published on Monday (April 14), Maggie Wheeler – who famously starred as Janice in Friends – spoke about Perry’s death and how she believes she was visited by his spirit.
In the series, Janice was in an on-again, off-again relationship with Perry’s Chandler Bing. Due to their close relationship onscreen, Wheeler has felt an attachment to Perry in real life, which she says might have manifested in a connection to his spirit follow his death.
Speaking to Steve Kmetko, Wheeler reflected on his death: “It hit everybody. People all over the world who loved him as Chandler, who benefitted from the joy that he spread by being a brilliant actor and by being so incredibly funny. The ripple — the wave was felt by so many. For me, I felt just heartbroken and sad that he couldn’t make it out of this incredibly dark tunnel that he was in for so long.”
Wheeler, who has lost her brother to drug addiction, went on to share that she thinks Perry and her late brother have found each other in the afterlife.
Wheeler shared: “There was an incredible moment — I haven’t talked about this anywhere, but if you believe in these kinds of things. Lots of people talk about spirit showing up as birds… and after Matthew died, I was in a neighbour’s pool.”
She continued: “And I was alone and there was nobody else was around and I was on my back and I was thinking about my brother, and I said, ‘Look out for him.’ And two hawks flew over my head and flew past me. One circled around and came and got the other one and it flew past me. So, that was a beautiful moment — if you go for that kind of stuff.”
The beloved star’s passing brought a wave of emotion from fans and co-stars. In January, fellow Friends actor Lisa Kudrow revealed she found a note from Perry in 2004, hidden in a cookie jar, that she had not discovered until recently.
Other Friends castmates have also shared how the death has affected them, with Courtney Cox saying she still talks to Perry daily, and Jennifer Aniston being brought to tears after a question about his passing.
In September, Dr Mark Chavez was charged in connection with the actor’s death and has pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute ketamine. Two others – Perry’s assistant Kenneth Iwasama and friend Erik Fleming – have pleaded guilty to their involvement in the Friends star’s fatal overdose.
Iwasama, Fleming and Chavez were offered lesser charges by prosecutors in exchange for their cooperation as they pursue others they believe to be more responsible for Perry’s death, namely Dr Salvador Plasencia and Jasveen Sangha – the so called ‘Ketamine Queen’ – who allegedly supplied Perry with ketamine.
Sangha has pleaded not guilty and claims she never met Perry. Dr Plasencia has also pleaded not guilty to illegally selling ketamine to Perry in the month before his death. Both will go on trial in August this year – the trial was originally set for March but was postponed.
