Scottie Scheffler is determined not to fall foul of the cut at Augusta National this week having missed the first four tournaments of the 2025 PGA Tour after badly gashing his hand while making ravioli at Christmas.

It was while cooking dinner for wife Meredith that the world No.1 stabbed himself with the stem of a broken wine glass which left him needing surgery. It looks like Scheff isn’t much of a chef.

The mishap resulted in a slow start to the year for Scheffler, who usually has a string of victories in the first three months of the campaign but is winless heading to Augusta National.

Still, he has been slowly getting back into the rhythm which has seen him wear the coveted green jacket twice in the last three years and was tied second in his last outing at the Houston Open a fortnight ago.

Scheff doesn’t mind having a joke at his own expense and included ravioli bites as a starter on the menu of his Champions Dinner on Tuesday and, in true Caddyshack spirit, wisecracked that he was going to ask the waiter to cut his ribeye steak for him to prevent a repeat of his previous mishap.

He takes to Augusta like a duck to water so punters will be laughing all the way to the bank after cashing in winning betting slips if they follow the defending champion at 5/1 with Betfred, Sporting Index and SpreadEx.

There hasn’t been an English winner at the Masters since Danny Willett way back in 2016 but Tommy Fleetwood, arguably the best golfer of his generation never to win a major, can go close to ending that streak.

He proved he can handle a difficult course by finishing tied third 12 months ago, is in decent nick this year, and worth an each-way flutter at 24/1 with Betfair. If he wins it’ll be tomato sauce on the ravioli or, better still, tartar sauce on his fish ‘n’ chips.

Golf fan Donald Trump may not be over the moon if Corey Conners tops the leaderboard on Sunday evening but the Canadian has a chance after three previous top-ten finishes at Augusta plus a third at the recent Arnold Palmer, T6 at the Players and T8 at the Valspar. There are no tariffs on bets so gobble up the 33/1 on him with Betfair.

Our final each-way choice is JJ Spaun at 75/1 with the same firm. The world No.29 was second after a play-off with Rory McIlroy at the Players and could flourish amid the juniper, azalea and magnolia at Augusta.

• Tottenham have had four managers since Mauricio Pochettino led them to the Champions League final in 2019 and it looks as though they will begin a search for a fifth if Ange Postecoglou doesn’t lead the club to Europa League glory by winning next month’s final. Spurs must win a tricky quarter-final first leg against Eintracht Frankfurt to have any chance of reaching the last four and they are 4/5 with William Hill, Ladbrokes and Coral to win, with a narrow 2-1 success 5/2 with bet365.

• Manchester United are not much better than Tottenham and face a painful night at Lyon, who are 8/5 with Betfred to take the lead to Old Trafford for the return leg, while Chelsea are 9/2 with bet365, Betfred and BoyleSports to win by more than one goal at Legia Warsaw in the Europa Conference League.

• Leeds belt out Kaiser Chiefs anthem I Predict A Riot after home wins but the indie band’s Every Day I Love You Less And Less was more appropriate before a run of four draws and a solitary success in six games ahead of Tuesday’s narrow victory at Middlesbrough. They should be belting out the former tune after Daniel Farke’s nervous nellies beat Preston at Elland Road on Saturday when they are 5/6 with William Hill to lead HT/FT. A 1-0 victory is 6/1 with BoyleSports.
