The Gangster Film That Best Sums Up Martin Scorsese's Career Might Just Be His Most Undervalued, Too

Of all the filmmakers who've made a mark on cinema in the past 50 years, few have done so quite like Martin Scorsese. Calling him a legendary director is sort of underselling him at this point, as he’s made numerous movies that could be counted among the best of all time, even outside the gangster films for which he’s potentially best known. After all, he’s directed Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, The Last Temptation of Christ, and Silence, to name just a few that don’t belong to the gangster genre. But then, of course, you’ve got those films that do revolve around organized crime, in one way or another: Mean Streets, Goodfellas, Casino, and The Departed, with the last of those being the film that finally won Scorsese Best Director (and Best Picture) at the Oscars. But then you’ve also got The Irishman, which, for a few reasons, isn't always held in the same high regard as his other gangster films.
