‘Thank you’: Mavericks to give away T-shirts honouring Luka Doncic in return
Two months after the shocking trade, Luka Doncic will return as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers. But the night comes with a twist.
Well, this could get awkward.
As you might remember, the Dallas Mavericks unceremoniously traded away former superstar Luka Doncic in the waning hours of a February night.
Now, two months later, Doncic will return as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers.
And to mark the occasion, the Mavericks are handing out T-shirts that read “Hvala za vse,” which is Slovenian for “Thank you for everything.”
The team is also planning a tribute video for Doncic, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported.
Doncic, 26, led the Mavericks to the NBA Finals last season, where the team fell in five games to the Boston Celtics. One year earlier, Doncic and the Mavericks advanced to the Western Conference final before being bounced by the eventual champion Denver Nuggets.
But reportedly due to a lack of preparation and fitness, the Mavericks dealt Doncic to the Lakers for fellow all-star Anthony Davis, Max Christie and a 2029 first-round pick.
Almost immediately, Dallas’s season turned south. Star guard Kyrie Irving was lost for the season with a torn ACL and the Mavericks (38-41) fell to 10th in the West.

Luka Doncic will make his first return to Dallas as a member of the Lakers when Los Angeles takes on the Mavericks Wednesday night. Watch the game on Sportsnet+ at 7:30 p.m. ET/ 4:30 p.m. PT.
Doncic’s Lakers, meanwhile, surged up the standings, where they now sit third at 48-31. Los Angeles fell to conference-leading Oklahoma City on Tuesday in a game in which Doncic was ejected.
