Spotify clarifies they won’t ban users for using a VPN

If you’ve ever streamed Spotify while connected to a VPN, you’ve probably seen the online debates—some claiming it’s fine, others warning of an outright ban. One Reddit thread recently reignited the confusion when a support agent told a user that VPN usage could get them kicked off the platform.

That’s wrong. The folks at Android Authority contacted Spotify directly to set the record straight, and here’s the good news: Using Spotify with a VPN will not get you banned.

A company spokesperson confirmed that VPN usage doesn’t violate the service’s terms outright. “This information is incorrect, and we’ve reached out to the user to clarify. Using a VPN may affect Spotify’s performance, but it does not result in a ban from the service. We appreciate the community for bringing this to our attention and have updated the relevant teams to ensure that users are accurately informed.”

That said, there’s a reason this issue keeps coming up. Spotify’s support pages and community forums clarify: Spotify doesn’t officially support VPN use. And that’s primarily because of how music licensing works.

The songs available on Spotify depend on your location. Using a VPN to change your country can confuse the system and potentially cause playback bugs, login issues, or region-specific content errors. If that happens, Spotify recommends turning the VPN off or allowing listing Spotify traffic to avoid issues.
