Split Fiction has become the best reviewed game of 2025, beating out Avowed and Monster Hunter Wilds

Created by Hazelight Games, Split Fiction is the follow-up to their celebrated 2021 co-op game It Takes Two.

Described as a “ boundary-pushing co-op action adventure”, Split Fiction will see players take control of Mio and Zoe, “two contrasting writers – one writes sci-fi and the other writes fantasy – who become trapped in their own stories after being hooked up to a machine designed to steal their creative ideas.

“They’ll have to rely on each other to break free with their memories in-tact, working together to master a variety of abilities and overcome diverse challenges while jumping between sci-fi and fantasy worlds in this unexpected tale of friendship.”

“One minute you’re taming adorable dragons and the next you’re fighting as cyber ninjas, escaping terrifying trolls, or dodging hover cars thrown by a robotic parking attendant,” continues the official description. “It’s weird, it’s wild, and it’s designed to be shared.”

Split Fiction is released tomorrow (March 6) for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. According to aggregator site Metacritic, Split Fiction is the best reviewed game of 2025 so far, with a score of 91.

The second best reviewed game of the year is Monster Hunter Wilds, which launched last week and sold more than 8million copies in just three days, with Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, Lonely Mountains: Snow Riders and Citizen Sleeper 2 rounding out the Top Five.

Split Fiction is a generational work. It’s brimming with creativity, tells a resonant story that reflects the current state of the world, and is a sincere love letter to genre fiction that has inspired so many of us,” wrote Inverse in their five-star review. “Everything feels so polished, and is executed with such confidence and style that it’s impossible not to fall in love with it. There’s really nothing else quite like Split Fiction in games today,” reads Eurogamer’s glowing review.

Responding to the critical acclaim, game director Josef Fares wrote: “This is amazing. Can’t wait for everyone to play it.”

In other news, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 has officially been announced, with the remastered skating game coming this summer.
