Jose Mourinho is the shock favourite to become Manchester United’s new manager if Ruben Amorim quits his job, according to bookmakers.

Amorim has admitted he should step aside as if the Red Devils take their poor league form from the end of the current campaign into next season.

The 40-year-old only succeeded Erik ten Hag in November but has unable to turn around United’s fortunes in the Premier League, with his side 16th.

Despite reaching this season’s Europa League final, United have massively struggled domestically and are just two spots above the relegation zone.

There are only two top-flight games to go and attentions have now turned to who may replace Amorim if he decides to walk away from Old Trafford.

Betfair have made Mourinho a staggering 4-1 favourite to take over from Amorim and become United’s manager for the second time in his career.

Mourinho managed United from 2016 to 2018, winning them the Europa League, Carabao Cup and Community Shield.

United also finished as Premier League runners-up during Mourinho’s spell in charge – which remains their joint-best top-flight season since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club in 2013.

Mourinho was sacked by United in 2018 because the club were unhappy with a lack of progress in form and the team’s pragmatic style of play.

Dubbed ‘The Special One’, Mourinho is currently in charge of Turkish club Fenerbahçe and is one of the most successful managers of all time.

  • Jose Mourinho – 4-1
  • Kieran McKenna – 7-1
  • Gareth Southgate – 8-1
  • Thomas Frank – 9-1
  • Xavi 10-1
  • Marco Silva – 11-1
  • Brendan Rodgers – 12-1
  • Mauricio Pochettino – 12-1
  • Unai Emery – 12-1
  • Carlo Ancelotti – 14-1

He has won league titles in four countries, is one of only six managers to have clinched the Champions League title with two teams and is the only boss to have landed the trophy in all three European club competitions.

Mourinho is well known in England having had two successful spells in charge of Chelsea while he also managed Tottenham from 2019 to 2021.

In 2010, while manager of Inter Milan, he led the Italian club to a famous treble – winning Serie A, the Coppa Italia and the Champions League.

Meanwhile, Betfair have made Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna the second favourite to take over from Amorim, offering odds of 7-1.

McKenna was strongly linked to the United job when Ten Hag was dismissed but the club ultimately decided to hire Amorim instead.

Third on Betfair’s list is former England manager Gareth Southgate – who like McKenna – has previously been heavily linked to the United job.

Southgate, who led England to runner-up finishes at Euro 2020 and Euro 2024, is currently out of work and is the third favourite at odds of 8-1.

Other names on the list include Thomas Frank (9-1), Xavi (10-1), Marco Silva (11-1), Brendan Rodgers (12-1), Mauricio Pochettino (12-1), Unai Emery (12-1) and  Carlo Ancelotti (14-1).
