Suryavanshi’s remarkable innings – which he made in Rajasthan Royals’ eight-wicket win over Gujarat Titans – saw him become the youngest player to hit a century in men’s T20s. His jaw-dropping 101, which included seven fours and 11 sixes, was the second fastest hundred in IPL history. Only Chris Gayle, the former West Indies batter and T20 legend, has scored a quicker century in the IPL. Suryavanshi, who turned 14 last month, was signed at last year’s IPL auction for just over £100,000. Rajasthan Royals made the teenage left-hander the youngest player in IPL history and he has already justified their backing. Suryavanshi hit the first ball he faced in the IPL for a maximum and, during his record-breaking century, took down several India regulars – including Mohammed Siraj and Ishant Sharma – as well as Afghanistan’s T20 gun Rashid Khan. But Suryavanshi’s century and a 166-run opening partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal helped Rajasthan stroll to victory with more than four overs remaining. The crowd erupted when Suryavanshi hit Rashid for six in the 11th over to bring up his incredible century. He made his first-class debut for Bihar at the age of 12 and has already featured in five Ranji Trophy matches, though he is yet to score a fifty in that format. Reacting to Suryavanshi’s extraordinary knock, India legend Sachin Tendulkar said: ‘Vaibhav’s fearless approach, bat speed, picking the length early and transferring the energy behind the ball was the recipe behind a fabulous innings. Well played!’ Tendulkar’s ex-India teammate Yuvraj Singh added: ‘What were you doing at 14?! ‘This kid is taking on the best bowlers in the world without blinking an eyelid — playing with a fearless attitude. Proud to see the next generation shine.’ The Rajasthan Royals team manager, meanwhile, said it was a ‘great pleasure’ for head coach Rahul Dravid to watch Suryavanshi stun the IPL and justify his selection at the auction. ‘Obviously, it’s a great pleasure for a great coach because he picked up Vaibhav in the auction and showed great belief, giving a sermon in all these practice sessions,’ Romi Bhinder said. ‘And when you see the result, Rahul Dravid is also a human being – he is very happy and also feels that at least we’ve got some serious talent, and we are trying to give this serious talent to the country. ‘Rahul hugged him and wished him luck, and we need many more like him.’ Suryavanshi’s heroics helped Rajasthan Royals end a five-game losing streak and climb from the bottom of the IPL table, while Gujarat Titans slipped to third.
