Respawn Entertainment recently announced it had canceled two games that were currently in the early development stages, as well as laid off an undisclosed number of its staff. A recent report sheds some light on this situation, which claims one of those projects was an unannounced Titanfall game, and that the layoffs impact the whole of Electronic Arts.
Respawn cancels Titanfall extraction shooter, EA lays off between 300 and 400 employees
In Respawn Entertainment’s statement on X (formerly Twitter), it announced it had canceled two projects in favor of shifting its efforts to Apex Legends and the next iteration of Star Wars Jedi. They also confirmed that their studio is affected by layoffs and is supporting those impacted by the decision.
“As we sharpen our focus for the future, we’ve made the decision to step away from two early-stage incubation projects and make some targeted team adjustments across Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi,” says the statement. These decisions aren’t easy, and we are deeply grateful to every teammate affected – their creativity and contributions have helped build Respawn into what it is today. We’re offering meaningful support to those impacted, including exploring new opportunities within EA.”
A couple of hours after Respawn Entertainment’s statement, Bloomberg‘s Jason Schreier reported EA is laying off hundreds of its staff. Specifically, between 300 and 400 employees were impacted, with around 100 of those from the Titanfall developer.
“As part of our continued focus on our long-term strategic priorities, we’ve made select changes within our organization that more effectively aligns teams and allocates resources in service of driving future growth,” says EA spokesman Justin Higgs in a statement.
According to Schreier’s sources, one of the aforementioned “early-stage incubation projects” is an extraction shooter set in the Titanfall universe. Sources also say the second project was canceled earlier this year. It is unclear if this is in reference to the previously reported first-person shooter from the developer.
Respawn Entertainment confirmed in its statement that it will continue to work on the next iteration of Star Wars Jedi, as well as an overhaul for its hit first-person shooter battle royale Apex Legends.
